SG Aviation Services’ was pleased to host its biennial seminar on pilot supply and demand trends which
took place in Dublin last month the 03rd & 04th of September. The 2015 seminar focussed on a Human Factors
Approach and included expert key-note speakers from KM Flight Research, Contracting Plus, and Dedale
SAS. Speakers looked at the need for a more comprehensive approach to psychological measures in Pilot
Selection that are fit for purpose. This was unsurprisingly a topical part to the agenda over the course of the
two days of the seminar and workshops given the recent Germanwings tragedy. One of the most insightful
presentations on Day 1 came from Jean Paries, ex Head of BEA Accident Investigation and indus try leading
expert on resilience who posed the question Do we still need Pilots?

The 2015 seminar boasted over 70 delegates from airlines across the globe including Emirates, Korean
Airlines, Norwegian, Qatar Airways, Ryanair, Aer Lingus, IndiGo, Turkish Airlines, AirArabia and Virgin Atlantic
Airways to name but a few. SG was delighted to be invited by the Irish Aviation Authority to host its two
daylong event at their newly opened conference centre ideal for such an Aviation industry focused event.

SG’s report dealing with pilot supply and demand, which provides a pragmatic and empirical analysis of the
state of the industry with unique insights into shifting demographics and trends at both macro and micro levels
was successfully launched to coincide with the event. This report deals not only with challenges facing the
industry, most glaringly the pilot shortage, but provides analyses of potential impacts and potential industry
responses. For example this year, discussions stemming from the report included a consideration of the Alan
Diehl suggestion that the Civilian Pilot Training Programme, in use in the US to help alleviate pilot shortage
just before World War II, be re-established. This idea suggests that scholarships could be provided to highly
qualified individuals who want pilot careers but cannot afford the price of tr aining with the cost of the
programme funded by an increase in passenger boarding fees. By Diehl’s estimate a USD$2 increase would
generate more than USD$1.5 billion annually to produce thousands of extra pilots. “Trends in Pilot Recruitment
